A melding of old and new, Temple Cafe offers Western and Chinese food and drink at excellent prices among the pillars and carvings of an ancient family shrine off Zeng Cuo An Beach.

Destroyed between1938-1945, during the Japanese occupation, the Zeng family hall was rebuilt in 1987 using the original specifications and traditional construction techniques. Last year the village council elected to open the cafe to help with the upkeep and maintenance costs of this fine example of traditional architecture. Interestingly, the building is still used for its original purpose, with meetings and traditional ceremonies being held several times a year.

Temple Cafe provides customers a continually evolving menu of pizzas, burgers, pasta and Asian food. An afternoon or evening of relaxed camaraderie gains welcome accompaniment with house wine (25 RMB), very affordable Tsing Tao (10 RMB), coffee (15 RMB) and mixed drinks. The Bloody Mary, a local favorite, is especially good and is served by the pitcher on Sundays for 99 RMB. In addition, Temple Cafe offers a deal of two-for-one pizzas on Tuesdays and set lunch specials with tea for around 20 RMB.

As afternoon fades to night the soft glow of traditional lamps highlight the Chinese carvings inset into wooden pillars, while a breeze is felt through the open door and centrally exposed courtyard-style roof. The customers who leisurely amble in are friends, and the genial greetings, bossa nova music, and beach village feel of the surrounding area combine to make this an especially relaxing venue.
