Xiamen Wave has learned that Starbucks has finally opened its doors in the city of Xiamen. On December 30th, 2010, the flagship Starbucks store in Xiamen, located on Lujiang Dao in between Zhongshan Lu and the Wyndham Hotel, opened their doors as part of a soft-opening startegy to generate buzz on the island. The official grand opening is to be held on January 5th, according to various reports.
Starbucks Xiamen flagship store has been dubbed the largest in all of China. The store boasts four floors and over 400 m2 of space for coffee aficionados and freaks alike to sip on a cup of their favorite American style java.
Xiamen Wave has learned that Starbucks is planning to open three other stores in Xiamen within the next couple of weeks. In addition to the flagship store located on Lujiang Dao (boasting a beautiful view of Gulangyu and the sea), Starbucks will be opening a shop at the Paragon Centre (near Carrefour on Xiahe Road), SM Phase II and, in this reporter’s opinion albeit rather sad, Xiamen’s very own coffee street: Yuandang Lu.

All of these new shops are part of Starbucks plan to enter into so-called Chinese “second-tier” cities and vie for market share. It has been rumored that Starbucks plans to open up to 10 outlets in the coming months and years.
Starbucks rapid expansion here in Xiamen will no doubt give old cafe favorites such as Coffee Club, Venice, MCafe, Brown Sugar and others a run for their money.
